BizTalk 2016 Feature Update 2: Error: Windows Installer Package. Program Did Not Finish As Expected

You may come across the following error when installing BizTalk 2016 Feature Pack/Update 2 (FP2)

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

The cause of this error was the failed installation of a Visual Studio (VS) extension named BizTalkApplication.visx. If the FP2 installation detects that you have VS already installed it will attempt to be helpful and include this extension. The error occurs when you have an installation of VS -- just not a supported one.

In one client's case, that problematic Visual Studio installation actually came from SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). It includes Visual Studio Shell (Integrated) which is detected but not supported. Uninstall VS Shell (Integrated)  and re-run the FP2 installation to see if this solves your problem.

Still facing errors? Try troubleshooting by installing the individual components. After the main installation of FP2, you'll find the unpacked components in the same directory as the log file (e.g. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\E-Business Servers Updates\Updates\Uninstall4054819). This particular error was discovered by first unpacking BTS16FP-EN.exe and then examining the log created by executing msiexec /lv myLog.log /i BizTalkServer2016FP.msi
